Cost of cigarettes should rise to £20 a pack say experts

Experts say ramping up the price of a packet of fags could save millions of lives. They say that research shows increasing the cost of one packet to around £20 - an extra 50 per cent - could have huge health benefits. Not only that, but it could actually reduce poverty in the long run by saving people endless amounts of cash.

If the current trend continues, smoking will be responsible for killing around one billion people in the 21st century. But making fags even more expensive could avoid hundreds of millions of early deaths - from various cancers, heart disease and lung diseases.

Prof Prabhat Jha, from the University of Toronto and St Michael's Hospital, said: "Our study debunks the current narrative that higher cigarette prices would negatively impact the poorest among us."This analysis shows the opposite - a higher price would encourage cessation, lead to better health, and save money much more strongly for the poor than the rich."
