Start Here: Smooth and Easy Cigars for New Smokers

Stepping into the world of cigars for the first time? Whether you’re curious about the rich aroma, the classic appeal, or simply want a relaxing new hobby, choosing the right cigar as a beginner makes all the difference. The good news? You don’t need to start with the strongest or most complex cigar to enjoy a premium smoking experience.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best cigars for beginners—from mild and mellow to sweet and flavoured. We’ll help you find good cigars for beginners that are smooth, affordable, and available in Canada. If you’re ready to light up your first stogie, read on.

Why Start with Beginner-Friendly Cigars?

If you’re new to cigars, starting with a full-bodied powerhouse can be overwhelming. Not only are strong cigars high in nicotine, but they also feature bold flavour profiles that can be too intense for a new smoker.

Instead, the best cigars for beginners tend to be:

• Mild to medium in strength
• Smaller in size (easier to smoke)
• Smooth on the palate
• Lower in nicotine content
• Flavourful without being overpowering

Think of beginner cigars as a smooth introduction—letting you ease into the culture without coughing up your lungs.

What Makes a Good Cigar for Beginners?

Before we jump into recommendations, let’s define what makes a good cigar for beginners:

1. Mild Strength

Strong cigars can cause nausea or dizziness in inexperienced smokers. A mild cigar allows you to enjoy the experience without side effects.

2. Consistent Burn

Uneven or fast-burning cigars are frustrating. Beginners will appreciate cigars that light easily and burn evenly throughout.

3. Smooth Flavour

Spicy or earthy cigars can be an acquired taste. Instead, look for mellow notes like cream, nuts, vanilla, or mild cocoa.

4. Small to Medium Sizes

Robusto or Corona sizes are ideal for first-time smokers. They offer a shorter smoking time (30–45 minutes) and don’t require as much commitment as large cigars.

Tips for Enjoying Your First Cigar

1. Cut It Right

Use a cigar cutter and snip just above the cap to ensure a clean draw. Avoid biting the tip—it ruins the structure.

2. Light Slowly

Use a butane lighter or wooden match to avoid ruining the flavour. Toast the foot (end) of the cigar, then draw in slowly while lighting.

3. Don’t Inhale

Cigars are meant to be savored—not inhaled like cigarettes. Take slow puffs and enjoy the flavour.

4. Pair with a Drink

Light cigars pair well with white wine, coffee, or light rum. This enhances the flavours and makes the experience more enjoyable.

5. Store in a Humidor

Cigars are sensitive to humidity. If you’re planning to smoke later, store them in a humidor to keep them fresh and prevent drying out.
