How Much Do Cigarettes Cost in Alberta? Price Breakdown (2025)

Cigarette prices are constantly changing in Canada, and Alberta is no exception. If you’re wondering how much do cigarettes cost in Alberta in 2025, you’re not alone. Whether you’re a regular smoker or a traveler passing through the province, understanding the current cigarette prices in Alberta can help you budget better, compare costs with other provinces, and find the best deals.

In this article, we’ll break down the current cigarette prices in Alberta, explain what factors affect the cost, and compare cigarette costs in Alberta to other provinces in Canada. Plus, we’ll show you how to save money when buying cigarettes in Alberta.

Why Cigarette Prices Matter in Alberta

Cigarettes are a common consumer good, but their prices vary widely due to provincial taxes and regulations. Alberta is known for having relatively lower tobacco taxes compared to provinces like British Columbia or Ontario. This makes cigarettes in Alberta somewhat more affordable—but even here, prices are rising.

If you’re buying cigarettes regularly, the cost of a cigarette pack in Alberta adds up quickly. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re paying for and how to find the best prices.

Factors That Affect Cigarette Costs in Alberta

Several factors influence cigarette prices in Alberta, including:

1. Provincial Tobacco Taxes

Alberta applies both federal and provincial taxes on tobacco. While the province has lower tobacco taxes compared to some others, these still add a significant cost per pack. As of 2025:

• Federal excise duty: $0.68725 per cigarette

• Alberta tobacco tax: $5.00 per pack of 20 cigarettes

Combined, this means around $13.75 in tax alone is included in the cost of a carton (200 cigarettes). That’s why even lower-priced cigarettes still cost a significant amount.

2. Brand and Manufacturer

Premium brands like Marlboro, Vogue, or Benson & Hedges tend to cost more due to brand value, packaging, and import duties. Budget-friendly brands like Canadian Classics cigarettes or Peter Jackson offer more affordable options without sacrificing much in terms of quality.

3. Retailer Pricing

Prices also differ depending on where you buy:

• Convenience stores or gas stations usually have higher prices due to overhead costs.

• Online cigarette retailers in Canada—like Save on Cigarettes—often provide lower pricing and bulk purchase options.

• Duty-free or Native reserves sometimes offer reduced pricing, but may not be accessible to all.

4. Location in Alberta

Urban areas like Calgary and Edmonton may see slightly higher prices due to rent and distribution costs, while rural towns may offer lower pricing.

Cigarette Costs in Alberta Compared to Other Provinces

How does Alberta compare with the rest of Canada in 2025?

Province	Avg. Price Per Pack (20)
Alberta	$16.50
British Columbia	$18.00
Ontario	$17.75
Manitoba	$17.25
Saskatchewan	$17.00
Quebec	$15.75
Nova Scotia	$18.50
Newfoundland	$19.00
Prince Edward Island	$17.50

Cigarette costs in Alberta are below the national average, making it one of the more affordable provinces for smokers. This is mostly due to Alberta’s more moderate tobacco taxes.

Cigarette Price Trends in Alberta Over the Years

Cigarette prices in Alberta have been steadily rising, mostly due to tax increases and inflation.

• 2022: ~$15.25 per pack

• 2024: ~$16.25 per pack

• 2025: ~$16.50–$17.99 per pack

We expect this trend to continue, as both federal and provincial governments may increase taxes to discourage smoking and promote public health.
